gender-2018At the height of a record hot summer, 15 PhD and MA students from Ghent, Groningen, Göttingen and Uppsala gathered at the centre for Gender Research in Uppsala for the second summer school in Gender Studies organized within the U4 network. 

For this edition the course was organized around the ever-timely theme of Methods, Methodologies and Ethics: Complexities and Responsibilities in Doing Gender Research.

fieldschool-2018During three weeks, between July 16 and August 4, a team of Bachelor and Master students of Ghent University, Groningen University, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, and Uppsala Universitet participated in a Fieldschool Material Culture in Thorikos (Attika, GR).

This highly important aspect, leading up to the publication, has always been the poor cousin within the archaeological chaîne opératoire. Students normally prefer excavation with the thrill of discovery and the unexpected. As we had a small excavation with a team from Utrecht University running at the same time, focusing upon the suspected city wall of Thorikos, however, students could still change over in a rotation scheme.

SUB Goettingen Paulinerkirche smallThe U4 Social Sciences, Economics and Law (SSEL) Conference on 'Current Challenges for a Sustainable Future' is organized from 21 to 23 November 2018 in Göttingen in the congress center Pauliner Church and aims to bring together researchers and PhD students from the participating universities (Ghent, Göttingen, Groningen and Uppsala).

The conference theme Current Challenges for a Sustainable Future operates on many levels in society. It involves challenges emerging from different aspects of the evolving patterns concerning institutions and governance, legal systems, sustainable policies, social inclusion, environmental innovations, jobs of the future, automation, migration, human rights, climate change, global value chains, among others.

The conference will host a number of sessions organized into panels focused on specific topics. The programme is available (SSEL_Programme_2018.pdf).

Eva kesson Medal 2018Uppsala University's Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson has received the H.M. The King's Medal of the 12th size with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim for "exemplary work in Swedish higher education".

Futhermore, Professor Svedjedal at Uppsala University's Department of Literature has received the H.M. The King's Medal of the 8th size, with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim.

H.M. The King's medal from the early 1800s is awarded for exceptional merits and to leading figures at the Royal Court for long and faithful service.

14The U4 universities (Ghent University, the University of Göttingen, the University of Groningen and Uppsala University) have joined forces with the University of Tartu to prepare an application for the European University project announced by the EU to strengthen Erasmus+ activities.

Founded in 2008 U4 has become a well-established and sustainable network, covering a wide variety of cooperation initiatives in different forms and fields.
