sustainability-summer-2018From 9 till 13 July Groningen hosted the first edition of the interdisciplinary U4 Summer School 'Creating a Climate for Change'.

Nineteen highly motivated students from fourteen different nationalities worked on real-life cases brought forward by the U4 partners.

In order to help them think about the cases, they attended lectures by experts from different disciplines: some being more theoretical, others more in the form of practical exercises. The students worked a.o. on Urban Farming (Uppsala), Digital Participation towards Sustainability (Ghent), and Greening the City (Groningen).

For each case, students had the chance to confer with a stakeholder. Then they set to work. Three interdisciplinary groups worked on the cases, approaching them from different angles and trying to come up with solutions that did not only work towards resolving the case itself but also took into account other (social) sustainability issues.

During the week, the Summer School tried to be sustainable as well. Students travelled through the city by bus or bike and the catering was vegan. On Sunday there was a welcoming dinner at restaurant ‘De Oude Gasfabriek’.

On Wednesday there was an excursion to the ‘Stadsakker’. The Stadsakker is a plot of land near the city where vegetables are grown that are sold in the shop in the city center which carries the same name (vegetable gardening shop). There, students took vegetables to a different location ‘Toentje’. At Toentje vegetables are grown specifically to the food bank of Groningen. At this location, members of the Green Office of the University of Groningen cooked a lovely home cooked meal for the students.
